MEHENDI AND SANGEET CEREMONIES

The Mehendi and Sangeet ceremony is an integral part of Indian wedding wedding, as these two pre-wedding functions are common in every north Indian wedding. They are performed in the homes of brides and also in the groom’s house, especially in states like Delhi, Himachal, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. It is a customary ritual and function that is performed by friends, family and relatives of the bride and the groom, as a mark of joyous celebration. It is mostly the bridesmaid and the sisters of the groom that are involved in Mehendi and Sangeet ceremonies, wearing colorful attires, which look outstanding in design and craftsmanship. The bridesmaid lehenga choli is one such classic attire that is practically worn by all girls who attend both these functions at home, and they look really splendid in traditional Indian attires, which forms the core of any conventional Hindu wedding. The wearing of Mehendi in the hands and singing of folk songs by playing Dhol (an Indian musical instrument) are customary in every north Indian wedding, where the bride and her friends participate, as a mark of celebration. Such wedding functions are a family affair, as it involves the participation of near and dear ones, who are absolutely close to the family.

Wedding is one such occasion, where everyone wishes and aspires to look special in order to grab the attention in the crowd. In fact, it is the bride and her friends that wear traditional Indian clothing during these two ceremonies, which are a purely family affair. Bridesmaid usually wear lehenga cholis, salwar kameez, Anarkali suits and Patiala suits during special rituals like these, and impress upon friends, whom they actually intend to. The bright colorful dresses and the traditional Indian jewelry are to be seen in every Indian wedding which is a display of colors, style and ethnic fashion that is simply a treat for the eyes. The homes are well decorated, painted and cleaned in advance to impress upon guests and visitors who come from far and wide to attend one such wedding ceremony, which is a once in a lifetime affair. Mouth watering food is prepared for the guests, especially local delicacies, both Vegetarian and Non-Veg stuffs, barring some exceptions. But overall, it is traditional Indian fashion clothing that creates a head turning effect and appeals to all those, who have a fond linking for colorful ethnic wear and designer bridal wear.
